An emergency department (ED)-based pneumococcal vaccination program for high-risk patients can substantially reduce the incidence and costs of pneumococcal bacteremia, according to a new study.
Pneumococcal bacteremia is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in adults, but only 45.4% of US adults older than 65 have an up-to-date pneumococcal vaccination status, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
