Equal-pay bill attracts co-sponsors, raises doubts

Nearly eight decades after winning the right to vote and a quarter-century since federal laws guaranteed equal pay for equal work, the average American woman in the work force makes 74 cents for every dollar paid to a man, according to the National Committee on Pay Equity.

And women in Pennsylvania earn even less, 72 cents, according to a growing group of legislators, union officials and advocates focused on eliminating the wage gap.

"That is unacceptable," said state Rep. Jane Orie, an Allegheny County Republican who is spearheading efforts to strengthen existing wage discrimination statutes ...
