All but the articles by Torrey Seland were contributions to a seminar on voluntary associations conducted by the Canadian Society of Biblical Studies in 1988-93. The volume is dedicated to three past presidents of the Society, Lloyd Gaston, William Klassen, and Harold Remus, all of whom reached "the traditional age of retirement" at the time the decision was made to publish the articles.
