London: Ariane 5 upgrades and future launcher strategy will be high on the agenda at next month's ESA Ministerial Conference
Ariane 5 was accepted as an ESA project in January 1985, following several years of preparatory studies by the French space agency Cnes - which in effect defined its basic configuration. The vehicle made its (disastrous) maiden flight in June 1996, completed a quasi-successful second mission in October 1997, and was finally accepted as operational following the wholly successful 503 flight last October.
