NOAA's Fisheries Service publishes 1999 List of Fisheries

National Marine Fisheries Service officials published the 1999 List of Fisheries last week, which categorizes each U.S. commercial fishery based on the number of marine mammals seriously wounded or killed during fishing operations. The agency made the announcement as required by the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act. Each fishery is placed into one of three categories according to the level of interaction with marine mammals. Category I consists of fisheries with frequent injuries and deaths of marine mammals.
