Liver biopsies can be cost-effective in selecting HCV prisoners for treatment

Liver biopsies are a cost effective way of evaluating and treating inmates for hepatitis C (HCV) and can serve as a critical component of a comprehensive screening and treatment strategy.

Virginia Commonwealth University presented a model to a conference on HCV in correctional settings that estimated cost savings of more than $100,000 for every 100 inmates evaluated and treated.

VCU conducted the analysis in conjunction with the Virginia Department of Corrections.

The model compared the hypothetical cost of evaluation and treatment of 100 infected inmates with and without a liver biopsy.
