Hans Werner Henze is one of a handful of composers who can claim to have written a significant body of postwar operas - this among hundreds of works of all kinds, from string quartets to monodramas, that he has produced in a long, industrious career. His best-known stage works include The Bassarids, The Young Lord and King Stag. Like Menotti, Henze has combined composition with administration of festivals (e.g., Montepulciano and Munich).
