ABSTRACT - Forty-five freshwater gastropod species have been reported from Maine. The taxonomic status of seven of these mollusks is questionable. These snails represent three prosobranch (Viviparidae, Valvatidae, Hydrobdae) and four pulmonate (Lymnaeidae, Physidae, Planorbidae, Ancylidae) famili es. Nine species and varieties have their type localities in Maine. Only one of the state's freshwater gastropods, Cipangopaludina chinensis malleata, is an alien species.
