Air Force locks on to readiness in defense budget

Pulling back from the depths of downsizing, the proposed Air Force budget for fiscal year 2000 moves out on a decided up tick to boost readiness and retention. In proposals released 1 February, the service gains $2.5 billion in FY00 and about $20 billion more across the Future Years Defense Program, which, an Air Force official said, "enables us to focus on the most urgent readiness issues."
