Manganese: Steelmaking still the keystone

In 1998, change and uncertainty were the themes for much of the world's manganese industry. In Western countries, these included three of the largest producers: Brazil's CVRD, Australia's BHP, and South Africa's Samancor. Early in the year, CVRD signified its willingness to divest its Azul mine in northern Brazil, its Urucum mine in southern Brazil, and its Vale-Usiminas Participaqoes (VUPSA) ferroalloy subsidiary.

Currently, VUPSA is responsible for much of Brazil's production of manganese ferroalloys. Later in the year, as part of BHP's corporate refocusing, its facilities for production ...
