`He has an amazing conceit, thinking himself in the direct line of descent with Cardwell and Haldane in matters of Army organisation. He knows nothing about it-even in his service in the RASC he seems to have acquired no military knowledge. Impossible to educate, thinking he knows what he doesn't know, impatient, subject to improper outside influence, ambitious, an advertiser and self-seeker-what can we do with him? To think that he classes himself with Haldane as a reformer! It would be funny were it not so lamentable and dangerous.'1
