The Jets needed a free safety, so they signed Steve Atwater.

Well, they still need a free safety.

Regardless of what the Broncos called Atwater, he never has been a free safety by the true definition of the term. "Being a pass defender never was his game, even when he was a younger player," one scout says.

Atwater wasn't even an every-down strong safety for the Broncos this past season. He was taken out on passing downs because at 32, he can't run anymore. Offensive coordinators viewed him more as a linebacker than a safety.
