Colombia pursues the peace dividend
|
Colombia never fell into the debt trap that hobbled most emerging markets a decade ago, and it has maintained an enviable record of steady economic growth. Today, perhaps the key challenge facing the the government of President Andres Pastrana, elected in May 1998, is to end the armed conflicts with rebel groups. Achieving this "peace dividend" will give a new dynamic to the economy. Colombia's business environment, and its future were discussed by key government officials and business leaders at a recent roundtable in Bogota. Global Finance's Ernest McCrary moderated.
