Albert Abraham Michelson (1852-1931)

Michelson was born in Germany and was two years old when his parents brought him to the United States. Figure 2 is a photo taken when he was 21. He grew up in a nonreligious family, was a free thinker, and was agnostic all his life. In 1907 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for his work on the velocity of light, which was found to be a fundamental constant of nature and served to negate the ether theory of light.
