Baltimore, Maryland: From dredge spoils to valuable soils

The USDA Agricultural Research Services (ARS) has entered into an agreement with the Maryland Port Authority to find ways to reuse the five million cubic yards of dredged soil spoils annually removed from the port of Baltimore and its estuarine tributaries. The ARS's Quarterly Report of Selected Research Projects relates that the spoils -- which originated as soil eroded from the land - have a low organic content. Scientists are researching the effectiveness of mixing the materials with poultry litter (operations in Maryland generate an estimated 339,000 tons/year of poultry litter). The ...
