Forbidden Signs puts the debate between the manualists and the oralists in a political, pedagogical, scientific, philosophical, historical, racial, sexual, economic, and linguistic context. In so doing, it encourages an understanding of the politics surrounding sign language, and especially the politics that led to oralist pedagogies usurping the hitherto established place of sign language in schools for deaf persons.
