The making of the social and religious history of Jabal Amil, known today as South Lebanon, has been long shrouded with speculation and confusion. This article investigates the nascent phase of Twelver Shiism in Jabal Amil, its cultural environment and the forces that shaped its reputed scholastic tradition during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries when leading Amili theologians defined the utility of legal and doctrinal knowledge for their clerical class and for Ottoman Amili society (923/15171918) at large.
