Shriners on Parade

In other places, at other times, the sight of grown men riding dune buggies and scooters while wearing red fezzes might seem a bit strange. But in New Orleans during Carnival the sight of the Jerusalem Temple Shriners leading a parade are as common as long beads and purple, green and gold shirts.

John Scholvin, a retired mechanic, rides in as many as 13 parades each year as part of the Jerusalem Temple Dune Buggy Unit. He's been riding with the unit since 1986.
