Part I

At one time my idea of acceptable dissonance in virtually any context was grabbing bloody, huge, non-sensical clusters of notes in both hands, jamming the sustain pedal to the floor, laying the boots to my old, barely functioning guitar amp with the spring reverb unit that the whole mess was blaring out of until it sounded like the roof was coming in.

I like to think that I've grown a tad more subtle over time.

The judicious use of dissonance can enhance the hook value of a phrase or solo in much the same way as altering one or two notes in a sequence of simple chords can revitalize a ...
