Na/K Pump Current and [Na]^sub i^ in Rabbit Ventricular Myocytes: Local [Na]^sub i^ Depletion and Na Buffering

ABSTRACT Na/K pump current (I^sub pump^) and intracellular Na concentration ([Na]^sub i^) were measured simultaneously in voltage-clamped rabbit ventricular myocytes, under conditions where [Na]^sub i^ is controlled mainly by membrane transport. Upon abrupt pump reactivation (after 10-12 min blockade), I^sub pump^ decays in two phases. Initially, I^sub pump^ declines with little [Na]^sub i^ change, whereas the second phase is accompanied by [Na]^sub i^ decline.
