David Wagoner's latest volume has many virtues, but the first that comes to mind is its admirable range. Wagoner's subjects span from Laurel and Hardy to Wallace Stevens, from landscaping rocks to the first passenger balloon excursion; and the book is arranged with such craft that the transitions between poems and sections are virtually seamless. The House of Song boasts a superb architecture, and each one of its rooms (or in Italian, stanzas) affords a pleasure that enhances the last.
