ABSTRACT
The surface wind stress response to sea surface temperature (SST) over the latitude range 30[degrees]-60[degrees]S in the Southern Ocean is described from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's QuikSCAT scatterometer observations of wind stress and Reynolds analyses of SST during the 2-yr period August 1999 to July 2001. While ocean-atmosphere coupling at midlatitudes has previously been documented from several case studies, this is the first study to quantify thi...

Sensitivity of basinwide meridional overturning to diapycnal diffusion and remote wind forcing in a idealized atlantic-southern Ocean geometry
Journal of Physical Oceanography
; (ProQuest Information and Learning. Formulae Omitted) ABSTRACT Recent numerical experiments indicate that the rate of meridional overturning associated with North Atlantic Deep Water is partially controlled by wind stress in the Southern Ocean, where the zonal periodicity of the domain alters the

Eddy Heat Flux in the Southern Ocean: Response to Variable Wind Forcing
Journal of Climate
; ABSTRACT The authors assess the role of time-dependent eddy variability in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) in influencing warming of the Southern Ocean. For this, an eddy-resolving quasigeostrophic model of the wind-driven circulation is used, and the response of circumpolar transport, eddy

Adjustment of the Southern Ocean to Wind Forcing on Synoptic Time Scales
Journal of Physical Oceanography

Adjustment of Near-Equatorial Wind Stress with Four-Dimensional Variational Data Assimilation in a Model of the Pacific Ocean
Monthly Weather Review
; ABSTRACT A four-dimensional variational scheme is described in which ocean observations are assimilated into an ocean general circulation model using wind stress forcing fields as control variables. Idealized ("twin") experiments are performed to evaluate the possibility of reconstructing wind
