Mike Van Sant
Yesterday
Mike Van Sant was one of the West Coast's premier Funny Car drivers from the late 1960s to the late 1980s. He excelled primarily as an independent racer but was chosen on occasion to drive for such luminary car owners as Mickey Thompson, Tim Woods, and Roland Leong.
Van Sant first became acquainted with drag racing while growing up in Torrance, Calif.
"I was about 15 and a half when I drove my motorcycle past Lions Drag Strip one day in 1964, " said Van Sant. "The noise caught my attention, and I went inside to watch cars like the Howard Cam Special. "
