MY FAVORITE BAPTIST PREACHER, Will Campbell, was once asked to state the Christian message in ten words or less. He took eight. "We're all bastards," he said, "but God loves us anyway."' That summary-and I can't think of a better one- reminds us of how central the atonement is to Christian faith, for the atonement is about how God loves us anyway. Yet talking about atonement today seems to lead quickly into puzzles and dilemmas.
