Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), a ubiquitous human herpesvirus, is the causative agent in infectious mononucleosis, a self-limiting lymphoproliferative disease in healthy individuals, and lymphoproliferative diseases in immune compromised patients. EBV is also strongly associated with a number of malignancies in humans including endemic African Burkitt's lymphoma, undifferentiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma, Hodgkin's disease, and peripheral T-cell lymphoma (for review see Purtilo et al., 1992).
