William Chandler Bagley, the founder of Kappa Delta Pi, has been neglected by professional educators and historians of education for far too long. Due mainly to a lack of attention to Bagley's primary source writing, Bagley, in large measure, has a reputation, in many circles, that is not altogether positive. This problematic, ahistorical position holds that Bagley was something of an "anti-Progressive" who wrote nothing other than "An Essentialist's Platform," an article published at the very end of his long and substantive career (1938).
