The debate over the teaching of evolutionary theory in public schools has raged for most of the past century. Oversimplified, the theory holds that living things change over time, through a process called natural selection. Implicit in this theory is the idea that humans share a common ancestral origin with lower classes of animals. Although widely accepted in the scientific community, the theory is controversial because its ideas are antithetical to the religious beliefs of many of our citizens.
