Reflexivity and moral agency: Restoring possibility to life history research

This essay addresses the question of whose story is represented in an ethnographic text. Is it primarily that of the subject(s), or that of the researcher? Utilizing theoretical reflection from anthropology and related disciplines, as well as personal reflection from an ethnographic study of the life of a contemporary elder American woman, I propose here two elements that must be considered in life history research in order to address the question of textual subject: a reflexive analysis and comparison of the relation of power between the ethnic, classed, and gendered positions of researcher ...
