INTERPRETATIONS OF the Jubilee Year (Leviticus 25) have tended to read it through the lens of various historical issues: how it fits into the legal-historical context of the ancient Near East,1 its literary-historical relationship to other biblical sources,2 and the historical background of ancient Israelite society reflected in the law.3 While these are undeniably important questions, they fail to address the meaning and function of the Jubilee Year within the Priestly cultic system of ritual and thought, a gap only partially remedied by studies of its key theological premises, such as the ...
