Democracy in Latin America met an old nemesis on 21 January 2000 when a military coup ousted Ecuadorian president Jamil Mahuad, citing the government's inability to manage the economy and reduce poverty. Though constitutional rule was quickly restored, albeit without Mahuad, Latin America's first successful military coup in over fifteen years was a reminder that democracy is not secure everywhere in the region.
