ALFRED SCHNITTKE
With the death of Alfred Schnittke, on 3 August at the age of 63, Russia has lost one of its most prominent contemporary composers. Schnittke was born on 24 November 1934 at Engels, on the River Volga, where there was a German-speaking community sufficiently large to maintain their language and identity. Both parents were German-speaking, his father, a journalist, coming from a German-Jewish background in Frankfurt. In consequence Schnittke became a member of the Soviet occupying force in Austria after the Second World War, so was introduced both to Viennese classicism and ...
