WHY DID FAULKNER, who had already written several long novels and an ongoing roman-fleuve, choose to complete a trilogy, a member of that genre which sits, tightly boxed, so squarely between its shorter and longer prose cousins? It's an obvious question, yet one which for nearly four decades Snopes critics have rarely asked, and never answered satisfactorily.
