Navy, Marine Corps funding shortfalls by 2005

U.S. Navy and Marine Corps leaders project a budget funding shortfall of $61 billion by 2005 with modernization suffering most acutely. Adm. Hal Gehman, head of the U.S. Atlantic Command, said accounts are underfunded right now. If the nation wants a military this busy and this big it is going to have to pay more for it. The Navy SH-60R and CH-60 helicopter programs, Evolved Sea Sparrow missile program, and cooperative engagement program have suffered. The Navy has a backlog of $90 million in ship maintenance.
