With the break-up of the former Soviet Union, the republics of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenist,n, and Uzbekistan emerged as independent countries in Central Asia. Despite Soviet attempts at Russification, Islam continues to be the predominant religion in that region. In fact, in 1992, the Central Asian polities joined neighboring non-Arab, Muslim states in creating the Economic Cooperation Council.
