Dekalb teams MEW with biotech to improve swine herd health

DEKALB, Ill-A combination of medicated early weaning and use of polymerase chain reaction has helped DeKalb Swine Breeders identify and viraNy eliminate toxigenic PmD, an organism that contributes to atrophic rhinitis, from its company-owned breeding herd.

The project, according to Dr. Bill Brown, the company's director of veterinary services, started in 1992 after a worldwide search to improve its herds' genetics.
