U.S. mine production of barite during 2002 was 400 kt (440,000 st), about the same as in 2001, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Barite consumption (apparent) - sold or used by grinding plants - decreased by 33.5 percent (1.5 kt or 1,650 st). Imports decreased by 39 percent (2.47 kt or 2,720 st). Most of the domestically mined barite was produced in Nevada, followed by Georgia and a small amount from Tennessee.
