Iodine

Elemental iodine is a nonmetallic with a relative atomic mass of 126.9045, which makes its atomic mass greater than many metals, including iron, silver and tin. Iodine's name is derived from iodes, the Greek word for purple, the color of the vapors and some solutions of iodine. Iodine is always found combined in nature.

There are 41 isotopes of iodine. Of those, 22 are artificial iodine isotopes with masses between 117 and 139. And 14 of these yield significant radiation. Because of their medical use in radioactive tracer work and radiotherapy, the most important radioisotopes are ^sup 131^I, ...
