Abstract

In 1999, outdoor education was included in New Zealand's formal school curriculum, as part of health and physical education. Its journey of development began with the political changes of the 1930s. This paper describes how Labour politics, post-WW2 social changes and curriculum reforms, and both Conservative and Progressive Liberal education ideologies created and sustained a climate in which outdoor education could emerge and develop.
