Answer: when it's a Challenger. If you're not familiar with the Piper Challenger, you're not alone. The Challenger is a relatively obscure model manufactured for only one year. Piper chose the name in 1973 to describe a follow-on to the 180-hp Cherokee G, the company's entry-level four-place airplane that could carry as many people as seats (well, sort of). The name change was substantive, if not long-lived.
