Introduction
In adults, measuring bone mineral content and reducing the risk of skeletal fractures by appropriate risk treatments is well recognised. During childhood and adolescence the attainment of optimal peak bone mass is of paramount importance and it is generally accepted that those children who achieve a higher peak bone mass are at reduced risk of having osteoporotic fractures later in life.1,2 The peak bone mass is achieved by the third decade of life, possibly earlier in females.3,4
