New iron ore pellet plant will increase CVRD's output

Cia. Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD) has approved plans to build a new US$438millon, 6-Mt/a (6.6-million stpy) iron pellet plant near Sao Luis, Brazil by 2001. Most of the directreduced iron (DRI) pellets will be exported to the United States and the Caribbean markets, the company said.

CVRD said it decided to build the new plant after the company determined that there would be a 9-Mt/a (10-million stpy) global shortfall of DRI pellets by 2000.

The new plant's feedstock will include 4 Mt/a (4.4 million stpy) of pellet feed from the company's Carajas hematite mine in northern Para. The feed is a ...
