ABSTRACT

A multi-tiered environmental risk assessment of formaldehyde determined the possibility of harmful effects on organisms in certain environmental compartments in Canada. A review of the relevant information indicates that biota are exposed to formaldehyde primarily in air and, to a lesser extent, in water. Worst-case scenarios predict that the estimated exposure values likely to be encountered in Canada for water and air are not expected to exceed estimated no-effects values.
