Amebic colitis in an asymptomatic patient

A 51-year-old asymptomatic woman with a recent history of travel to Israel and Hong Kong underwent a routine colonoscopy for cancer screening, which revealed multiple mucosal ulcers in the cecum. Biopsy samples from the cecal ulcers identified colonic mucosa with ulceration, acute inflammation, reactive atypia in the crypts, and numerous trophozoites of Entamoeba histolytica (Figure 1). Erythrocytosis by the trophozoites was identified on higher magnification (Figure 2).
