ABSTRACT

International genetic evaluations that use national genetic evaluation results as input need to acknowledge country boundaries. The current model for international evaluation treats each country as a genetically separate trait, i.e., assumes milk production to be similar within country, but different between countries. The use of cow performance records does not require such restriction, and allows for other statistical models to consider genotype x environment interaction. Fi...

Genetic Correlations Between Milk Production and Health and Fertility Depending on Herd Environment
Journal of Dairy Science ; ABSTRACT High milk production in dairy cattle can have negative side effects on health and fertility traits. This paper explores the genetic relationship of milk yield with health and fertility depending on herd environment. A total of 71,720 lactations from heifers calving in 1997 to 1999 in the

Genotype by Environment Interaction for Milk Production Traits Between Organic and Conventional Dairy Cattle Production in The Netherlands
Journal of Dairy Science ; ABSTRACT Estimates of genetic parameters for organic dairy farming have not been published previously, and neither is information available on the magnitude of genotype by environment interaction (GE) between organic and conventional farming. However, organic farming is growing worldwide and basic
Principal Components and Factorial Approaches for Estimating Genetic Correlations in International Sire Evaluation
Journal of Dairy Science ; ABSTRACT The increasing number of participating countries and the lack of genetic links among some of them lead to statistical and computational difficulties in estimating the genetic (co)variance matrix needed for international sire evaluation of milk yield. Reparameterization using principal
Changing Definition of Productive Life in US Holsteins: Effect on Genetic Correlations
Journal of Dairy Science ; ABSTRACT Data included 392,800 records for cows born between 1995 and 1997. Traits analyzed were milk, fat, and protein yields, somatic cell score, days open (DO), 18 linear type traits, final score, and several measures of longevity. Productive life (PL) was defined as the total number of days in
Heritabilities, Genetic Correlations, and Genetic Change for Female Fertility and Protein Yield in Norwegian Dairy Cattle
Journal of Dairy Science ; ABSTRACT Data from 1,815,581 first insemination records from daughters of 2697 Norwegian Dairy Cattle (NRF) sires were analyzed. A multitrait model was used to estimate genetic parameters and genetic change for 56-d nonreturn rate in virgin heifers (NR56D0), for 56-d nonreturn rate in first
Genotype x environment interaction for milk production of daughters of Australian dairy sires from test-day records
Journal of Dairy Science ; ABSTRACT In Australia, dairy farming is carried out in environments that vary in many ways, including level of feeding and climate variables such as temperature and humidity. The aim of this study was to assess the magnitude of genotype x environment interactions (GxE) on milk production traits
Genetic Parameters for Milk Urea Nitrogen in Relation to Milk Production Traits
Journal of Dairy Science ; ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for test-day milk urea nitrogen (MUN) and its relationships with milk production traits. Three test-day morning milk samples were collected from 1,953 Holstein-Friesian heifers located on 398 commercial herds in the Netherlands. Each
The Association of Herd Milk Production and Management with a Return-Over-Feed Index in Ontario Dairy Herds
Journal of Dairy Science ; ABSTRACT Associations of herd milk production and management variables to a return-over-feed (ROF) herd profit index were examined among 95 dairy farms. The ROF index is derived from 2 important determinants of profit on dairy farms: milk income and feed cost. All producers were participants in the
Relationship Between Level of Milk Production and Multiple Ovulations in Lactating Dairy Cows*
Journal of Dairy Science ; ABSTRACT Our objective was to evaluate factors associated with spontaneous multiple ovulations in lactating dairy cows. Ovaries of cows [n = 267; >50 days in milk (DIM)] were evaluated weekly using ultrasound to determine spontaneous (i.e., no hormonal treatment) ovulation rate starting at 50
