During the fifties I was occasionally asked to talk on All India Radio in Bombay and Delhi about the English qualities in such composers as Vaughan Williams, Walton and Britten. My own interest in the music of India had been diverted by previous visits to Goa, where the music had been greatly influenced by their association over many years with the musicians who travelled there from the Portuguese Court.
