1. INTRODUCTION
The last hundred years of the existence of the Habsburg Empire witnessed the emergence among its Slavic subjects of a number of national languages more or less in the form in which we know them today: Czech (hereafter: Cz), Slovak (hereafter: Slk), Slovene (hereafter: Sln), Croatian (hereafter: Cr).1 In each case, the renewal movement (Cz obrozeni, Slk obrodenie, Sln/Cr preporod) successfully carried out three main tasks with respect to this respective national language: standardization, lexical enrichment and purification of undesirable elements.
