The actions of natural and synthetic glucocorticoids are in part determined by 11[beta]-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2 (11[beta]-HSD2). We examined whether carbenoxolone, a potent inhibitor of 11[beta]-HSD, would potentiate the inhibitory action of dexamethasone on interleukin-8 release from BEAS-2B cells, and whether prolonged treatment with dexamethasone at therapeutic doses would upregulate 11[beta]-HSD2 in the cells. We found that carbenoxolone increased the potency of dexamethasone ...

Interferon-[gamma] Inhibits Transforming Growth Factor-[beta] Production in Human Airway Epithelial Cells by Targeting Smads
American Journal of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology ; Because Interferon (IFNgamma] may attenuate pulmonary fibrosis, we hypothesized that IFN-[gamma] may regulate transforming growth factor (TGFbeta] production by airway epithelial cells. Human bronchial epithelial cells (HBECs) were incubated with IFN-[gamma] TGF-[beta]1, -[beta]3, or interleukin
Insertion of Alzheimer's A[beta]40 Peptide into Lipid Monolayers
Biophysical Journal ; ABSTRACT The amyloid beta (A[beta]) peptide is the major component found in the amyloid deposits in the brains of Alzheimer's disease patients. In vitro studies have demonstrated that the aggregation of A[beta] can take place at three orders of magnitude lower concentrations in the presence of
Characterization of barley tissue-ubiquitous [beta]-amylase2 and effects of the single nucleotide polymorphisms on the enzyme's thermostability.
Crop Science ; [beta]-AMYLASES (EC 3.2.1.2) are exohydrolases that cleave [alpha]-1,4-D-glucosidic bonds, releasing maltose from the nonreducing ends of a variety of polyglucans. [beta]-Amylase is one of the four carbohydrases involved in starch degradation during seed germination. Similarly, [beta]-amylase
Latent TGF-[beta] Binding Proteins: Extracellular Matrix Association and Roles in TGF-[beta] Activation
Critical Reviews in Clinical Laboratory Sciences ; ABSTRACT: Transforming growth factor betas (TGF-[beta]s) are multifunctional and pleiotropic growth factors. Their major effects include inhibition of cell proliferation and enhancement of extracellular matrix production. TGF-[beta]s are secreted from cells as latent complexes, consisting of mature
Development of an Orange-Flavored Barley [beta]-Glucan Beverage
Cereal Chemistry ; ABSTRACT Barley [beta]-glucan concentrate shows great potential as a functional food ingredient, but few product applications exist. The objectives of this study were to formulate a functional beverage utilizing barley [beta]-glucan concentrate, and to make a sensory evaluation of beverage quality
Induction of regulated upon activation, normal T cells expressed and secreted (RANTES) and transforming growth factor-[beta]1 in airway epithelial cells by Mycoplasma pneumoniae
American Journal of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology ; Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection exacerbates asthma in children and may play a role in the pathogenesis of chronic asthma. Because the airway epithelium is a preferential site for M. pneumoniae infection and a major source of the chemokine regulated on activation, normal T cells expressed and
Pleural fluid transforming growth factor-[beta]1 correlates with pleural fibrosis in experimental empyema
American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine ; Transforming growth factor-[beta]1 (TGF-[beta]1) is a growth factor that is implicated in fibrosis of many organs. The purpose of this study was to determine the sequential levels of TGF-[beta]1 in the pleural fluid of rabbits that had undergone empyema induction, as fibrosis of the pleural space
A Novel Endo-[beta]-Mannanase Gene in Tomato LeMAN5 Is Associated with Anther and Pollen Development1
Plant Physiology ; Endo-[beta]-mannanase (EC 3.2.1.78) is involved in cell wall disassembly and the weakening of plant tissues by degrading mannan polymers in the cell walls. Endo-[beta]-mannanase genes are expressed in tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) seeds (LeMAN1 and LeMAN2) and fruits (LeMAN3 and LeMAN4). A novel
Voltage-Gated Rearrangements Associated with Differential [beta]-Subunit Modulation of the L-Type Ca^sup 2+^ Channel Inactivation
Biophysical Journal ; ABSTRACT Auxiliary [beta]-subunits bound to the cytoplasmic [alpha]^sub 1^-interaction domain of the pore-forming [alpha]^sub 1C^-subunit are important modulators of voltage-gated Ca^sup 2+^ channels. The underlying mechanisms are not yet well understood. We investigated correlations between
Invited Review: [beta]-Lactoglobulin: Binding Properties, Structure, and Function
Journal of Dairy Science ; ... each bound to the central binding cavity of bovine [beta]-LG at pH 7.3. Neither ligand is fully visible in the electron density maps, and the less well-ordered regions are the polar end groups at the mouth of the binding site. In a separate experiment, a mercury ...
