IN A SMALL section of the U.S. Marine Corps graveyard in Guam known as War Dog Cemetery, lie 25 American soldiers. These Doberman Pinschers and German Shepherds rest in peace alongside their human comrades.
The dogs' job in battle included carrying messages and medical supplies, detecting mines and booby traps and spotting ambushes. It was one of the most dangerous missions in World War II. Their handlers learned to trust the dogs' instincts with their lives.
These particular dogs were to be returned home when the war ended. That was the promise. In the end they were fatalities of a squabble ...
