Ellen Henrietta (Swallow) Richards, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology [MIT] instructor in chemistry, saw her work as chemist in the laboratory of life as more important than her performance on the stage of leadership and subsequent recognition. Her leadership can be summed up by the following chemical equation:
