In a previous study (9), a mitogen for rat mammary epithelial cells was partially purified from pituitary glands. In the present study, we set out to isolate and characterize this mitogen. Using a slight modification of the previous method, an alkaline extract that was prepared from bovine pituitaries was found to contain two mitogenic activities. We have identified these components as hemoglobin and cell ferritin. The iron core of the latter is implicated as the mitogenic component identified in the previous study.
